Gray hairs can affect anyone, at any age! Now, unless you're Daenerys from HBO’s Game of Thrones, chances are you want to avoid the white hair look. A common mistake with battling gray hairs is not using the right colour – gray hairs require a special colour since it’s lighter than your regular hair colour. If you’re a DIY type of gal, then it is recommended that your colouring solution should include two colours; one of your hair’s regular colour and one that is darker. This way, the very light gray hairs will be taken care of with a natural finish. Also, it is super important that the product you use clearly states "formulated for grays" - the colour saturation depends on this.
Following your colouring, wash your hair with Paul Mitchell's Colour Protect Shampoo!
If you have a lot of gray hairs, maybe you should consider a colouring job done by a salon! Mother’s day gift idea?
Is your hair light? Is your hair dark? How light is it? How dark is it? These are questions to ask yourself in order to dictate your hair’s “level”; level 1 being jet-black and level 10 being platinum blonde. But that’s not all; your hair’s “tone” also matters! The hair's tone indicates the underlying yellow and red colours in the hair. It can vary from a cool tone, a warm tone, to a neutral tone. Each of these categories consists of their own variety of colour tones.
Identifying your tone may be a bit more difficult than identifying your hair level - if you're not sure what your tone is, ask your hairdresser!
Knowing these detailed hair characteristics will result in purchasing the right product for when you colour your hair at home, giving you optimal results!
A hair colour that doesn’t match your skin tone is a recipe for looking older than you actually are – yikes! Listen carefully; just because everyone is going platinum blonde for the summer, doesn’t mean you should too... Look at your veins – yes, I said veins. Are they a blueish tint or are they a greenish tint? If you answered "blue", it means you have a cool tint, in which you should try ash blonde, brown, or black with blue or violet undertones. If you answered "green", your tint is warm; gravitate towards strawberry blonde, brown, red or black. With this knowledge, you can then choose a colour that compliments your identified tone.
Once you've established your hair's level, hair's tone and skin tint, check out WELLA's Colour Touch line for colouring your hair!
Let me paint you a picture: you step out of the shower, you wrap your hair in a towel, you dry yourself, you undo your hair towel, you ruffle your hair - maybe do some hair flips, you look in the mirror and realize that your hair has parted itself in the same location it always parts in.
Your hair is set in its ways – time to show your hair whose boss! This is probably the least frequent aspect of change women apply to their hair – it’s almost like the way we part our hair gives us a sense of comfort. The most flattering areas to part your hair is either on the side or off-center; the reasoning behind this comes down to the symmetry of your face. A center-part is considered to be harsh for it could draw attention to any little asymmetry of the face, so unless you’re a face-contouring master, consider a parting that is off-center or on the side!
You can identify you face shape and see what the best hair-parting is for you by reading our piece: The PERFECT Hair-Part For Your Face Shape!
Don’t waste your money on wrinkle-targeted skin care products or Botox; instead there is a much easier, much quicker, more affordable and very effective way to erase those pesky forehead wrinkles! Drum roll please… BANGS! Go to your salon and after only 30 minutes, you will leave wrinkle-free and looking 10 years younger. You’re welcome.
To help style and hold your bangs, try WELLA's Sugar Lift Spray!
Be honest; when was the last time you changed your hair style? If you’re actually thinking long and hard about this, I’m afraid the time has come: time for a new do! I’m not saying you need to do something drastic, but even a new length, a trim, adding layers, or wearing it curly instead of straight could be enough to freshen up your look. If you’re stuck, I recommend you ask your hairdresser for advice on what to do.
For a hair-change less drastic and that can easily be done at home, try Lakme's Sea Mist Sea Spray for an authentic beach look!
Common mistakes I witness are moms trying to look too young; there’s a big difference between 40 year old women who look 30, than a 40 year old woman who is trying to look 18. Attempting to look over two decades younger than you actually are, will only make you look older. That is why it’s important not to overdo it – be smart in your hair styling choices and maybe avoid the little girl pig-tails.
But you can totally rock a ponytail using Salon Club's Hair Slinky - BEST. INVENTION. EVER.
Last but most certainly not least, it’s important to be confident! You can pull off any hair style if you are confident in doing so. At the end of the day, it’s important to have fun with your hair. Step out of your comfort zone, explore different looks, and you’ll look and feel beautiful!
