Winter is coming, brace your hair.

As the cold front moves in, your hair shouldn't take the hit. Below you'll find some great tips on how you can keep your hair a hydrated dream when the weather is - 15 degrees.

Beware of the Brush

Keep in mind that wet hair means weak hair, so never comb through your hair when it's wet. This would cause immense damage, especially during colder months when your hair is already prone to breakage.

If you absolutely must comb through your wet hair for some particular reason, we suggest gently using your fingers.

When combing through dry hair, make sure to use a wide toothed comb like the detangling comb from Salon Club. Wide tooth combs will cause the least amount of damage because they tug a lot less.

Using a good boar bristle brush is also a great way to help maintain moisture in your hair as it helps to distribute your hairs natural oils instead of absorbing them.

Its Prime Time

Before styling your hair, especially prior to using any hot tools, make sure to lather your hair with a heat protectant cream or thermal spray.

To create an extra protective layer against both the styling tools and the cold winter, lather your hair in a moisturizing cream before styling.

Mask It Up

Apply a hydrating mask like the K.Therapy Bioargan Hydrating Mask by Lakme to your hair once a week. Masks are intense treatments that give your hair instant repair.

Hair masks are more beneficial than conditioners; as masks are created to penetrate through the hairs cuticle, whereas conditioners rest on the surface.

The best way to apply a hair mask is to:

  1. Shampoo your hair with warm water, the heat will open up the cuticles of your hair
  2. Apply a generous amount of the hair mask to your hair starting from your roots to your tips
  3. Wrap your hair in a hot towel
  4. Let the mask sit for 20-30 minutes
  5. Shampoo and condition your hair with cold water
  6. Make sure to get the entire mask out of your hair otherwise your hair will be unmanageable

Depending on your hair needs, you should be trimming off your dead ends every 3-4 months to prevent future breakage, to promote hair growth and strength; especially during the cold winter months.

Air Dry or Die

I'm sure you've been told multiple times by your parents not to go outside with wet hair otherwise you'll catch a cold.

Well that isn't quite true.

The truth is that your hair is the most vulnerable when its wet. If you go outside during the winter with wet hair, you risk having your hair freeze and break.

Yikes.

With that being said, make sure to dry your hair before going outside otherwise you risk diminishing even more moisture.

*Hot hair tip: Use a thermal spray before styling hair to prevent the creation of static when you put on a hat. Keep your hair as cute as your tuque.

Drop the Tools

Calm down, not forever silly.

Try to use your styling tools less often, the cold is already going to cause enough damage. The heat from styling tools will cause even more dryness, static and breakage.

Instead, scrunch a hair oil into your hair and let it hair dry.

If your hair is being uncooperative, put it into a braid or a ponytail.

As the months get colder, putting a little more effort in your hair care routine will make all the difference.
